Modules for 200 and 300 YTTs

I developed and teach the following modules and workshops for Yoga Teacher Trainings (YTTs) in Vancouver.  Most of these can be adapted for use in either 200 hour or 300 hour advanced formats. They run approximately three hours in length but can be adjusted depending on need. Each module includes a visual presentation that I share via projector.

A History of Vinyāsa Yoga

This module covers the history of modern yoga from the late 1800s onwards. Topics include the role of Tiramulai Krishnamacharya, the rise of modern power yoga and the big questions of appropriation and commodification.

Classical Aṣṭāṅga Vinyasa Krama

Become rooted in the classical approaches to Vinyāsa Yoga. We explore the theory and learn the  practice of two forms of  Vinyāsa: the Aṣṭāṅga Vinyāsa of Mysuru, and Vinyāsa Krama as taught to Srivatsa Ramaswami in Chennai.

Yogic Origins

Here we explore the oldest roots of yoga prior to the Yoga Sūtras. These include the Vedas and Upaniṣads as well as Buddhist, Jain and Tantric traditions that influenced the development of haṭha Yoga.

Living the Yoga of Patañjali

Explore both the history, philosophical vision and practices of the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali, the most important source for the tradition according to Krishnamacharya, but also perhaps the most widely misunderstood.

Classical Haṭha Yoga

Where does the word “haṭha” come from? What does it mean to practice hatha yoga? We will examine the history of haṭha Yoga and two of its most important texts, the Haṭha Yoga Pradīpikā and the Yoga-Yājñavalkya.

The Teacher Within

As teachers it is critical to develop a self-practice. In this module we explore ways to maintain our own relationship to the traditions of yoga while also navigating the business and commodification of the practice.

The Inner Limbs

In this module we explore how to develop a practice of Prāṇāyāma and Meditation in the vinyāsa tradition of Śri Krishnacharya, and discuss how to integrate these components into modern yoga instruction.

Sanskrit in the Yoga Studio

An introduction to the fundamentals of Sanskrit pronunciation, the history of the language, and its (mis)use in the modern studio environment. We also look at several commonly mispronounced words like haṭha and mudrā.
